Allan Port's Brimfield Report- July 1998

A number of people have asked me if you can find any (fine, interesting, antique) paperweights in Brimfield. Brimfield is a large antiques / flea market that takes place in Brimfield, Massachusetts in May, July and September.

These paperweights were found at Brimfield in July, 1998.  Everyone says July is not a good time to go to Brimfield.  Many dealers don't bother to show up.  And since it is hot, some dealers close up by 3 or 4 in the afternoon.  I wandered through six or seven fields (out of the 20 or so open).  Most of these paperweights were "found" in the first field where I spent the most time.  There were many other paperweights there, notably a nice Clichy patterned millefiori and an interesting Flag weight of unknown origin.  There were also the usual assortment of newer Murano, Chinese, Indian, American paperweights and French Sulphide paperweights.

2 Unusual John Degenhart Centerpiece set consisting of a toothpick holder or mini vase and two matching paperweights.  This set is unique in my experience.  Take a look at the closeup.  Under the toothpick holder there is a white plaque with with a enamel paintings of a flower and tree and the word "Mother".  The toothpick holder is 2 1/2" in diameter by 3 5/8" high.  c.1930-50.

6 Paperweight of unknown origin with aventurine.  I've seen these small paperweights before and haven't been able to identify their origin.  The last time I bought one I labeled it early Venetian (possibly 19th C).  I welcome your opinion. 2" diameter by 1 1/8" high.

7 Maurice Heaton bowl. OK, it's not a paperweight.  But it is a great piece of glass. Approximately 7" by 9".  Signed M.H.
