Paperweights by Unknown Makers for Sale

The paperweights on this page are from unknown factories, especially those where I cannot even establish a country of origin.  Some of these are inexpensive fun paperweights.  If you know more about any of these, please let me know.

If you would like to purchase any of these paperweights, e-mail me at: aport@paperweights.com

1040 Erickson Magnum Bubble Design Faceted Paperweight.  Circa 1940 - 1960.  This large faceted paperweight has perfect execution.  There is a warm ruby pink center, surrounded by a layer of closely spaced controlled bubbles.  The paperweight has unusual faceting with 16 finger facets around the base.  All of this creates a magical appearance.  A wonderful paperweight.

As for origin, I have seen this paperweight attributed to several different factories, but I believe that it is by Carl Erickson of Bremen, Ohio.  An identical paperweight without the faceting is attributed to Carl Erickson in the book American Glass Paperweights and their Makers by Jean Melvin on page 58.  Other sources have attributed this to one of the Degenharts or even to a Murano factory.  It is, however, unlike any Degenhart paperweight and also different in construction from any Murano weight I have seen.

Carl Erickson came from a line of glass makers and worked at Pairpoint Glass (New Bedford, Massachusetts), Libbey Glass (Toledo, Ohio), and Blenko Glass (Milton, West Virginia) before starting his factory in Bremen, Ohio in 1943.  He was born in 1899 and died in 1966.

Magnum size:  3 1/2" diameter by just over 2" high.  Circa 1940 - 1960.  I believe this to be by Carl Erickson.
Very good condition:  No chips or cracks, but it does have a small 1/8" circular impact mark near the top of the dome.  In the larger image I have added an arrow pointing to the impact mark.  It is difficult to see and I did not discover it until I took these pictures.  I have reduced the price because of this flaw.    SOLD

2683 Magnum Antique Bent Wire Name Paperweight.   circa 1900-1930.  Unusual example of a bent wire name (Janice Puner) over a white ground of icepick flowers.  The name is formed in script from two sections of red (possibly copper) wire.  There are six icepick flowers, each with a bubble in the center and also six additional bubbles placed between each flower.  An interesting paperweight made either in Bohemia, elsewhere in Europe, or possibly the US.

Von Brackel discusses this style in his book (see pages 210 to 217).  He illustrates a number of different styles of bent wire name weights over various grounds and attributes them possibly to several different locations in Bohemia, Germany, Belgium or even France.  His examples all feature a red lettered name made of copper wire.  The price guide is in the $200-$250 range for most examples.

Alternatively, it is possible that this paperweight is made in the US using techniques originally developed in Europe.

Magnum Size:  Just under 3 3/4" diameter by 3 1/4" high.
Condition:  Very good condition for its age.  A few small scuffs and scratches, but nothing major.  No cracks.
Signature:  Unsigned.  The bottom is fire finished to a concave shape.
Execution:  Very good.  A few small bubbles on the wire.

1061 Miniature Faceted Glass Paperweight.  Circa 1980 - 2000.  Faceted miniature paperweight with floral arrangement.
The flowers appear to be painted or otherwise applied to the bottom of the paperweight.  The five layered faceting is quite intricate and the top is slanted so the design can easily be viewed.  Quite flashy.  A fun item.

There is a felt bottom so I cannot examine the exact construction.  It may be a printed design on paper.

Miniature size:  1 1/2" diameter by just over 1 1/4" high.  Circa 1980 - 2000.  Made by an unknown maker.                    SOLD
Excellent Condition:  No chips or cracks.

1182 Unknown Millefiori Paperweight.. Concentric millefiori paperweight of unknown origin with blue ground.

I can't really say much about this paperweight.  It may be Murano, Bohemian, or possibly even a practice piece made by an American maker.  My records show that I thought this might be Bohemian when I bought it.

Size:  Just under 2 3/4" diameter by 1 1/16" high.  The paperweight has a very flat profile.
Very good condition with some wear on top and on the base.  The base is ground flat.

$55 postage paid in the US.

2457 Unknown Large Abstract Bullet Shaped Paperweight with Silver Foil.. Dramatic paperweight with two layers of silver foil.  Signed (see closeup picture).

It is difficult to show you the actual brilliant silver foil affect.  The paperweight is much nicer than what shows in the pictures.

By an unknown maker.  Probably circa 1970 to 1990.  I purchased this at an estate auction in the 1990s.  It has a Scandinavian look to it, but may be American.

Very Large Size:  About 7 1/2" tall by 2 5/8" diameter.  Ground flat on the bottom with a concave area where the pontil mark was removed.  Signed but I cannot read the signature.  Excellent condition.  There are a few tiny pinpricks right at the base.   SOLD

1759 Antique American or English Scramble Paperweight.  Age and origin unknown. This is an interesting scramble paperweight full of millefiori canes and one large pastry mold cane in the center.  There is a variety of canes including one white six-pointed star cane outlined in green.

When I bought this paperweight, I thought it was American, possibly New England Glass Company from the 1860s, but I still don't know who made it.  The millefiori canes remind me of early Whitefriars type canes from the 1920s era (Walsh-Walsh, Arculus, Richardson, or other makers).  The canes are placed close to the bottom as is the case with Whitefriars paperweights.   There is also a possibility that this weight dates from as late as the beginning of the Whitefriars revival in 1951 as the canes also resemble those found in the 1951 Triplex weight.  It has the low profile of an English weight.

Although many people collect scramble paperweights for their own merit, scrambles are also valuable tools for learning to identify the different colors and canes used by each factory.

Size: 3" diameter by 1 5/8" high.
Good Condition:  The paperweight has quite a bit of scratching on the dome and a few small nicks around the side.  No moons or impact marks or cracks.  The bottom is ground concave.  Unsigned.

$175 postage paid in the US.

2438 Vintage Icepick Flower Paperweight.  Age and origin unknown.  Great vintage stylized icepick flower paperweight by unknown maker.  The design consists of a red center with three icepick flowers arranged on the outside.  The three flowers are pink, white, and orange.  Each has a carefully placed bubble in the center.  This has all the characteristics of a true whimsy, made in spare time by a glass worker.  I believe this was made in the midwest US around the middle of the 20th century but it could also have been made elsewhere outside the US.  A wonderful example.

This design is sometimes called an icepick flower design because an icepick type tool is pushed down through the top layer of ground glass to make the stem and points of the flower.

Large Size:  3" diameter by 2 7/8" high.  circa. 1920-1960.
Excellent Condition:  No chips or cracks.  No impact marks.  The bottom is unfinished with a rough pontil mark and shows considerable age.   SOLD
