Perthshire Paperweights for Sale
Perthshire is a small company in Crieff, Scotland that was devoted to the creation of quality glass paperweights. They stopped production in January 2002 after more than 30 years of production. Their paperweights were consistently high in quality and yet remained reasonable in price.
The birth of Scottish paperweight making is credited to the glass making family of Salvador Ysart, who moved to Crieff, Scotland in 1922. They worked first at John Moncrieff Ltd and made the earliest Scottish paperweights during that period. In 1946 Salvadore and his sons Augustine and Vincent founded Ysart Brothers Glass and produced glass wares under the Vasart label. The company name was later changed to Vasart Glass.
Stuart Drysdale was hired manage the business side of the enterprise in 1960. The company evolved into a new company Strathearn owned by Teachers Whiskey. In 1967 Drysdale was sent a magazine article on antique paperweights (Woman's Day, July 1965). The inspired him to try to produce weights comparable to the French antiques. With this goal in mind, he and several of the glass workers left Strathearn to found Perthshire in 1968.
Peter McDougall was one of the very young glass workers who left Strathearn in 1969. When Perthshire closed in 2002 he was the head craftsman of Perthshire. Peter now has his own studio PMcD Glass Studio and makes paperweights under his own name. For a selection of Peter's paperweights, see my PMcD page.

Perthshire PP90 Medium Millefiori Paperweight.
circa 1987-1988.
This hard to find paperweight consists of a large complex central cane
cluster surrounded by five smaller complex cane clusters over a dark blue,
almost black, ground. It is signed with the Perthshire "P" in the
center. A very showy weight.
Because the PP90 design was made only in 1987 and 1988, it is a relatively difficult design to find. Each cane cluster looks like it could have been made of separate canes, but the standard reference on Perthshire states that these are complex canes. Size: 2 1/2" diameter by just over 1 3/4" high.

Perthshire Annual Edition 1972C Miniature Flower. This
paperweight features a pink lampwork flower in a stave basket of pink,
blue, and white floret canes. The Perthshire "P" signature cane is
in the center of the flower. This design was Perthshire's first use
of a stave basket in a paperweight. It comes with its original certificate
identifying this as #582 out of a limited edition of 1000.
This was a difficult paperweight to photograph. The pink stave basket in the background makes the pictures look dark, but the actual glass is clear and this little paperweight is a miniature jewel. Perthshire made this paperweight as one of their first annual collection items. This means the design was made only that one year and never again. They made a crown weight as the annual collection item for 1969. In 1970, they made a dragonfly paperweight and a flash overlay millefiori weight. There were four annual collection weights for 1971 and only three annual collection weights for 1972. An identical paperweight sold for $432 in Selman's Spring 2009 Auction. Size: 2" diameter by 1 1/2" high.

| 1000 | Perthshire Pin or Candy Dish with Complex Millefiori Pattern. Colorful
pin
dish or candy dish with a paperweight pattern in the base. This is
especially nice because it is based on a paperweight with all complex canes.
The ground is a translucent green. The glass of the rim is clear,
the colors you see are a reflection from the green ground and the canes
in the paperweight. This dish has a paper label "PERTHSHIRE PAPERWEIGHTS
CRIEFF SCOTLAND".
Perthshire and other scottish makers have a history of making candy dishes and other shapes out of paperweights when they realize that the product is flawed in some way. I suspect that they also make these dishes to order. Size: Just over 4” diameter by 1 9/16” high. Excellent condition with no scratches, chips or cracks. There is a slight smudging of the canes in the design. Signed with a paper label "PERTHSHIRE PAPERWEIGHTS CRIEFF SCOTLAND". SOLD Click on the picture to see a larger image. |

| 1345 | Fancy Cut Perthshire PP163 Paperweight. Miniature paperweight
with four concentric circles of millefiori around a central cane with Perthshire's
traditional "P" signature cane. The ground is cobalt blue.
The weight has star shape with six double points. It is also signed
on the bottom with a paper label "PERTHSHIRE PAPERWEIGHTS CRIEFF SCOTLAND".
Perthshire called this a pressed weight because a mold is used to form the outside ribbing. The top is flattened. There are several different molded paperweights made by Perthshire. This style is more flashy and slightly larger than the less expensive PP75. Size: 1 15/16" diameter by 1 1/4" high. Outstanding condition with no scratches, chips or cracks. Shipment will include a Perthshire millefiori sampler box (see below). SOLD Click on the picture to see a larger image. |
